Classical Music, Walt Disney, and Peter and the Wolf

Although he did other serious works based on Tolstoy's War and Peace, and Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, Sergei Prokofiev is most famous for Peter and the Wolf, in which he uses different tunes to illustrate different characters in the story. Walt Disney, after inviting the great Russian composer to his studio, was inspired to do an animated feature of the tale. This beloved story is great for children because the music is so illustrative of the characters. The listener can visualize the story just by listening, even without seeing a movie, or even pictures. Be sure to introduce your children to this rich cultural experience with classical music.
